Newcastle Gaol
Built in 1862, Newcastle Gaol functioned as Toodyay’s prison until 1907 when modern facilities were built on the Police Station lot adjacent.
The Gaol was used as a family residence during the 1920s and 30s before being abandoned. Due to community action and Council support, Newcastle Gaol opened as the first regional museum in Western Australia in 1962.
Today, Newcastle Gaol presents Toodyay’s history amongst the cells and living quarters of a 19th Century prison.
- Learn why the townsite was relocated and renamed after 30 years of settlement.
- Discover the crimes and punishments of the inmates of Newcastle Gaol and marvel at the escapes of WA’s audacious convict Moondyne Joe.
- Be moved by the personal histories of the early settlers and the tragic story of three brothers lost at war.
Part of the Newcastle Gaol complex includes the Police Stables. Originally erected in 1854 and restored in the 1970s, the stables house large carts, fire wagons and a saddlery display reflecting the towns mounted police history.
The Gaol has ample parking space, toilet facilities and the Year of the Youth Park is opposite, providing a nearby site for picnics.
