Kookynie is a ghost town, one of the few that still has residents and an operating hotel. Kookynie was once a flourishing mining town, it is located 796km north-east of Perth.

This township was virtually built overnight with the discovery of gold in the late 1890’s. The water under the surface was used for supplies and railways but also flooded the mines which caused many problems. The Kookynie Grand Hotel still has a real Australian pub with a beer garden which overlooks the old mines.
