One significant local character to Dampier is Red Dog; a bronzed statue of a dog located at the entrance to the town. Red Dog was born in Paraburdoo in 1971. The beloved character was known for his amazing homing instinct. He travelled from Perth to Broom to Port Hedland; yet his magnificent skill always returned him to Dampier or Karratha.
