Conservation and Nature Reserves throughout the Shire of Toodyay provide a unique opportunity to experience the region’s natural heritage and encounter spectacular flora and fauna.

Nestled amongst magnificent hill country and the valleys of the Avon River, wildflowers are especially abundant between the months of July and November each year. The diverse habitats of the region showcase an exquisite range of wildflowers.

Reserves containing examples of Sandplain or “Kwongon” vegetation, despite their poor soil types, support great botanical diversity.

Wattening Nature
Drummond Nature Reserve,

Due to the favourable soils associated with the York Gum and Jam Wattle vegetation, much of these areas have been cleared for farming. Travelling to the reserves in the wildflower season, particularly in the early spring, the roadsides will be lined with yellow from the Jam (Acacia acuminata) blossoms.

Bewmalling Nature Reserve

The Wandoo and Powder Bark Wandoo woodlands of the Wongamine, Julimar (south) and Rugged Hills Reserves are the “jewels in the crown” within the Shire of Toodyay.

Please take extreme care when travelling on country roads. Gravel roads can be slippery, particularly when wet and wildlife may unexpectedly appear. Please note that mobile phone coverage is limited outside the Toodyay townsite, so please be prepared if you are driving or walking into the reserves.

The Toodyay Visitor Information Centre, located on Piesse Street in Toodyay, provides seasonal guides for wildflower locations, drive trails and walking tracks as well as books, souvenirs and further information on Toodyay’s natural surrounds. Make this your first stop before heading out to discover the diverse environment of the Avon Region.
