Dampier overlooks Hampton Harbour in King Bay some 1,555km north of Perth. The islands of the Dampier Archipelago are renowned for being one of the best fishing spots in Australia.

The town was specifically constructed in 1965 for use as a port and processing centre for the Hamersley Iron mining. Dampier is the home of The Dampier Salt Company, which is, Australia’s largest salt producer. The salt company has over 9000 hectares of salt, producing over 2.4 million tonnes of salt every year.
